To sum up the race today…. it blew!!!
The wind, that is. I am not sure of the exact wind speeds, but I think it was ~20mph with 30 mph gusts. If you weren’t behind someone, it sucked. Big time.
This was my first bike race in ~10 years. With the monster tailwind, I opted to stay out of trouble in the pack and lead out for the first 5-6 miles, including leading up the first hill, at least for the first part of it. By the top of the hill, 4 guys put a small gap on the field and I couldn’t bridge the gap or get my group organized enough to chase them down. Nitwits.
I dropped my group on the 2nd big climb, but cresting it put me face first into the wind. I picked up another rider, but by then, the group caught me.
I hung with the group until the turn onto 392. The pace was pretty fast at that point and I was a little toasted from the wall. I did manage to pick up a few people on the final climb for a 10th place finish. All in all, not too bad. No crashes and I had fun.
Congrats to the big German for powering up the final climb for a 5th place finish. From the sounds of it, he was battling the wind alone most of the day as well.
Not sure what happened to hard man Hansen. I wasn’t able to catch up with him after the festivities.
